Nothing brings out the best and worst in us better than being in a relationship. I never thought I could act like a beast until I got married. The good news is that there are steps you can take to draw the best qualities your partner could have, and in the process, draw out the best in yourself as well.
Help Your Partner Realize His/Her True Potential
Most people simply do not realize how much potential they have until someone shows them. Your partner is not exempted. If you believe there is more your partner could do than what he is showing right now, help him realize his true potential. If you have a gift of recognizing a person’s strengths, it would be of great help to you. If you don’t, you can use tools such as Strengths Finder. This tool will let your partner know what his main strengths are and realize his potential. You can take the test, too, to find out which area you and your partner could help each other.
Inject Humor Into Your Relationship
Easing the tension in your relationship through humor is an excellent way to bring out the best in your partner. There’s something about laughing together that makes your relationship stronger. Laughter is one of the best ways to relax, and sharing it with the person you love is simply priceless. It also brings in a positive vibe into your relationship, allowing your partner to feel and realize that she can be herself around you.
Be a Supportive Partner
Showing support is a great way to bring out the best in any person. Offer your partner as much support as she needs even if things do not always work out. You partner will fail many times in your relationship. He may fail at work, he may fail at home, and he may fail you as a person. It’s hard to show support during hard times, but it’s a surefire way to encourage your partner and give him the hope to try again.
Produce an Air of Positivity through Encouragement
Speaking of encouragement, there are people who perform better when they are shown encouragement. If your partner is the type of person who needs positive reinforcement all the time, don’t hesitate to give it to him. Encouragement produces an air of positivity, which motivates people to be the best they can be. This is opposed to nagging, which produces a negative atmosphere, and actually produces results opposite to what we would want to achieve.
Celebrate with Your Partner in His/Her Victories
Never feel insecure about your partner’s accomplishments. Instead, use them as opportunities to bring out the best in her. Acknowledging even the smallest of accomplishments of your partner is enough to boost her self-confidence. This will help her succeed easily with more difficult tasks in the future. Even if she doesn’t consider her accomplishment a major one, make it a big deal by throwing a celebration. This will up her self-esteem and assure her that she is capable of doing anything.
Respect Your Partner
Whether it’s listening attentively to your partner every time she speaks, providing support when she needs one, or simply being truthful to her at all times, it’s important to let your partner know that you respect her as a person. The more she feels that you love and respect her, the more she will feel secure and valued.
Be Generous in Giving Adoration
Your partner likes it that you admire her, but she will love it even better if you always show how you adore her. One way of showing adoration is by verbalizing how great a person you think she is. You can do it by telling her you love her as often as you can. You can send her romantic text messages, for instance, during the day when you’re both working and are away from each other. Or, if she loves getting letters, you can write her romantic notes from time to time, telling her how you feel about her.
Learn How to Develop Deep Communication in Your Relationship
Finally, learn how to communicate with your partner on a heart level. We all need to understand the importance of deep communication between partners, because it keeps us secure, bringing out the best in all of us. As mentioned in my previous article, one way to develop this form of communication is to practice listening to your partner before speaking. The more you lend your ear to your partner, the more he or she will feel important, and that’s an excellent way to bring the best out of another person.
I know that it is impossible to follow all of these steps all the time, but rest assured that no one can. However, if you understand that strong relationships are those that are built on trust, respect, and unconditional love, you yourself will have a relationship that’s will bring out the best in you and your partner.
