Benefits of Reading – Reasons Why Reading Is Good For You

Benefits of Reading - Reasons Why Reading Is Good For You

I find television very educating. Every time somebody turns on the set, I go into the other room and read a book.” ― Groucho Marx

In a fast-paced world dominated by technology, it makes sense to pick up a book once in a while and take a break from everything that’s going on around you. Reading a book – whether sci-fi, fantasy, history, or even mathematics – can take you into another dimension. Books are a form of portable entertainment, and no matter what you read, the act of reading regularly can help you in almost every aspect of your life.

Reading Protects Your Brain from Mental Decline

Studies show that there is a strong link between low levels of education and a higher risk for Alzheimer’s disease. While well-educated individuals are still susceptible to mental decline, their level of education seem to protect them from Alzheimer’s and other similar neurological disorder. Reading is an excellent way to stimulate the brain and strengthen connections between brain cells. Simply put, your brain are your biceps and reading your form of workout. That is how important reading is for your brain.

Reading Slashes Stress

Dr. Seuss was right when he said, “Reading can take you places you have never been before.” There’s just something about reading that temporarily blocks out everything and allows you to enter a world without stress. Regardless of the amount of stress you have, it all just vanishes away once you start immersing yourself in a great story.

Reading Encourages Positive Thinking

Of course, not all books can do this, but reading in general can motivate you when you’re down. When you’re feeling inefficient at work, for instance, reading a book about productivity can help you regain your focus. When you’re stressed with all the clutter at home, reading a book about minimalism can help bring the inspiration that you need.

Reading Fortifies Friendships

Reading has a unique way of uniting people. Whether you’re looking to build a new circle of friends or are attempting to reconnect with old friends, reading can play an important role to help you achieve your goal. Many bookworms have gotten to know people in their community they otherwise wouldn’t have known if not for a common love for books. Some group of friends make it a habit of gathering at least once a month to share their love of reading.

Reading Improves the Quality of Your Life

Reading is one of the major pillars of learning, and there’s no question that being well educated is key to having a quality life. Through reading, you can widen your vocabulary, increase your knowledge, and develop critical thinking. All these things are crucial in opening doors of opportunity that you can use to improve your life.

Reading Builds Character

Perhaps the most important benefit of reading is that it helps build your character. From fables with moral lessons, to biographies and autobiographies of some of the world’s most influential people, books are a powerful tool that can help you build the character that it takes for you to win and achieve your goals and dreams.

You can make excuses to not start reading a book, but there’s really nothing to lose by investing in a good book. After all, nobody has died from being a bookworm.
